The Wyoming Moose Lodge did something very unique and out of the ordinary this spring. Moose member Joe O’Neill took his idea of planting a garden to the Board of Officers as part of a volunteer program for the Mi. State University Master Gardner Extension program. The idea was approved and Joe went to work putting together his committee. Fran Jacobs, Terri Noel and about 20 other volunteers got started. They tilled a 30 ft. x 90 ft area on the street side. Put up a fence and that’s how it began. On Saturday May 22nd, a “planting day” was scheduled. All members and their families were encouraged to attend. The plan was to show children how their vegetables were grown and not just available at the local supermarket. We have reaped an abundance (so far 15-20 bushels) of tomatoes, beans, radishes, lettuce, squash, peppers, to name just a few. We’ve also enjoyed the beautiful flowers along the outside of the fence. Every morning more fresh produce is picked and available for members at the lodge. Also, one of our Members Butch Persons has brought produce almost daily from his garden at home. Many, many members have enjoyed this. Anything left over at the end of the day is donated to the local Veteran’s home who have welcomed the added produce with open arms. It has been a great experience as the whole community has watched the progress of the “Moose Garden”!! |
